Sen. Bill Nelson
calls on Homeland Security to investigate Disney World's use of visa program
Sen. Bill Nelson,
D-Fla., wants to get to the bottom of a visa program that late last year cost
about 250 data systems employees of Walt Disney World in Orlando their
livelihood.
He is calling on the
Department of Homeland Security for assistance.
In October 2014, the
Disney workers were told they would lose their jobs to immigrants on temporary
visas for highly skilled technical workers. Those individuals were brought to
Disney through an outsourcing company in India.
“For the next three
months,” according to The New York Times this week, “some Disney employees were
required to train their replacements to do the jobs they had lost.”
Nelson on Thursday
asked the Homeland Security to investigate the company’s use of the visa
program created by Congress in 1990 to allow up to 85,000 foreigners with
computer, engineering or other advanced skills -- to enter the U.S. to fill
jobs that otherwise would go unfilled because of shortage of U.S. workers.
In a letter to the
agency, Nelson wrote: "I plan on delving further into this issue in the
Senate and request that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security also
investigate potential misuses of the H-1B visa program. I want to know if there
are abuses going on in the system."
For its part, Disney
on Friday responded with a statement that said, "Disney has created almost
30,000 new jobs in the U.S. over the past decade, and the recent restructuring
of our parks IT team in fact resulted in a larger organization with 70 additional
in-house positions and the rehiring of 120 people in the U.S. External support
firms are required to comply with all applicable employment laws."
Please tell me again
President Reagan, why did you start the avalanche of the destruction of union
workers in this country?
Did you not care for
the working man/woman or was it like the move you made towards the recognition
of wannabe Indians through-out New England and casting aside the true
traditionalist?
