Hillary Clinton's New Ad Destroys How Trump Talks About Women
Hillary Clinton released a new campaign ad on Friday featuring young women looking at themselves in a mirror intercut with Donald Trump saying awful things about women’s appearances throughout his many years in the limelight.
The ad, called “Mirrors,” includes such gems from The Donald as “A person who is flat-chested is very hard to be a ten” and “I’d look her right in that fat ugly face of hers” and finally, in answer to the question, “Do you treat women with respect?” Trump smiles and says, “Uh, I can’t say that either.”
As if that’s funny.
The ad ends with these words:
“Is this the president we want for our daughters?”
The video is an important comment on how (some) men not only objectify women, but also how they dismiss them purely based on looks without much care for what that does to them—especially young women who are still in the process of figuring themselves out.
As gentlemen, it’s not only our duty to treat women with respect, but to also be aware of how what we say when we talk about them may be heard. Yes, we’re going to say things about how beautiful they are, and we might even say a thing or two about what we may not like about them, but it’s important—really important—to consider what our words might do to girls who are inundated with images of what the world thinks they should be.
We’re not endorsing Clinton here, nor are we endorsing Trump. We’re not about that at Made Man, and if Trump drops a powerful commercial tomorrow we’ll cover that, too. However, we will call out men for being tools. Surely, Trump is not always objectifying and demeaning women as this ad may imply, and he has raised an astonishingly awesome daughter who clearly respects him, but it’s crucial to remember who he is when it comes to talking about women.
It’s an interesting ad, and an even more important message regardless of where you sit on the issues.
